Pearland Adoption Attorney

Do you want to adopt a child?

My name is Dennis M. Slate, Attorney at Law, my firm has been named as one of the top family law firms by Houstonia Magazine, and I have been selected for inclusion in Texas Super Lawyers® Rising Stars℠. If you are looking for professional, dedicated legal representation in your adoption case, you will receive the same level of representation of a big, expensive law firm but at a much lower cost.

My credentials include the 10.0 Superb Avvo Rating and being named a Top Attorney by H Texas Magazine , I also have 20 years of service in the U.S. Army and Reserves, of which I am currently a major.

I understand how important it is to be meticulous and precise, and to pay attention to the smallest details in an adoption case, which is the exact type of representation you can expect from my firm.

Information on Adoption in Texas

In order for an adoption to be finalized, the parental rights of at least one of the birth parents must be terminated by the court. Once this is completed, a petition for adoption must be filed with the court. If the petitioner is married, both spouses will need to be on the petition.

Other requirements include:

  • The child typically must live with the adoptive parents for at least six months.
  • An ad litem may be appointed for the child.
  • A criminal history check for the adoptive parents must be performed.
  • A health, social, education, and genetic history report must be prepared for the child, with the exception of stepparent adoptions.

Once the above steps are completed, a court hearing will be held to determine if the adoption is in the child's best interests.

How are a birth parent's rights terminated?

The parental rights of a birth parent can be terminated by: 1) a voluntary relinquishment by the birth parent signing an affidavit giving up their rights, 2) an alleged father's failing to register with the state's paternity registry, or 3) an involuntary termination where the court terminates a parent-child relationship because it is in the child's best interests.

Beginning the Adoption Process

Adoption can be a wonderful, life-changing procedure that brings families together and enriches the lives of all involved. If you and the child's birth parents have agreed to an adoptive placement, or if you want to commence a stepparent or other family adoption, I urge you to contact my office for assistance.

As your Pearland family law attorney, I will answer all of your questions, explain your rights under the law and ensure that no stone goes unturned during the adoption process.
